The Israel-Palestine conflict
🔥 Escalation in Gaza
Israel carried out an airstrike on May 13, 2025, targeting Hamas leader Mohammad Sinwar at the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The strike killed at least 16 Palestinians and wounded around 70. Sinwar had taken the place of his brother Yahya Sinwar, assassinated by Israeli forces last year. This followed the release of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander by Hamas and amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Doha. Israel has issued a three-day ultimatum to Hamas for the release of other hostages before the end of President Trump's Middle East tour.

⚖️ International Legal
Actions
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants
for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav
Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The ICC
also issued a warrant for Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif for attacks in
Israel on October 7, 2023.
Additionally, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been involved
in ruling on the legality of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian
territories, with ongoing deliberations and international watching.

🚨 Humanitarian
Crisis
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has continued to worsen. In April
2025, the World Food Program (WFP) announced that it had handed out its final remaining rations to
kitchens preparing hot meals in Gaza. The blockade has led to severe food
shortages, and over 65,000 children are suffering from
acute malnutrition.
The United Nations and relief agencies have warned of the danger of famine
and called for access for aid to the victims urgently.

🕊️ Prospects
for Peace
Two-state solution initiatives have attracted fresh interest.
In September 2024, a new international coalition co-led by Saudi
Arabia, the EU, Norway, and other countries was inaugurated to
seek a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The organization is committed to resuscitating peace initiatives and
has planned follow-up sessions in Riyadh, Brussels, Cairo, Oslo,
Amman, and Ankara.
Yet there remain concerns to be settled, like
border disagreements, the fate of Jerusalem, Israeli
settlements, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

🌍 International Reaction
The global community remains divided in response to the
conflict. Whereas some nations have supported legal action and
humanitarian aid efforts, others have expressed alarm at the
escalation of military action and the humanitarian price to civilians.
The United Nations General Assembly voted on a resolution in
December 2024 for a high-level conference to effect the relevant
resolutions and achieve a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The conference is scheduled to occur from June 2 to 4, 2025, in New
York.

🧭
Conclusion
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains an extremely complex
and multidimensional challenge, and recent
developments indicate the necessity for a lasting and comprehensive solution.
International legal actions, humanitarian concerns, and renewed peace
initiatives reflect the international community's interest,
yet there remain significant challenges to a sustainable
peace.
